THE ARTIST BOOK - ONGOING CONVERSATIONS

We've all had some kind of relationship with books for most of our lives, and we've experienced how books can be a conversation between the writer and the reader. The "artist book" provides many additional conversations.

For me as the artist, there is the conversation about which materials will go into the book and what form, among many possibilities, they will take. Then there is a conversation between color and texture - I like that one a lot - and a simultaneous ongoing conversation between the skills I have learned and the need to just relax and enjoy the ride.

One thing that inspires me as I work is the conversation I imagine between the book and someone who comes along and sees it. The book might ask, Do you want to hold me? The person looking at the book might ask, Well, what's in here? Or, How might I use this? What of myself might go in here?

Each of the books displayed here contains an envelope. That's because I like envelopes. I like folding, and I also like surprises. Envelopes contain surprises. Then they can contain other surprises.

Although I have done artist books with content - that is, the materials and form have been chosen to correspond to a story in words - the books here are waiting for content. Is there one that suggests a story to you?
