Several years ago, after a career in Public Health and moving to Chapel Hill, Karen decided to devote herself to her life-long love of creating art. Her primary media are in two-dimensional painting (mostly oil or watercolor) and photography. Both inform the other from the standpoint of their artistic vocabulary and inspiration.
When creating art she has the intent of emphasizing mood and celebrating color and light. She especially enjoys painting “en plein air”, which provides her with the full range of sensory experiences. She is most fascinated with images showing reflections in water and shadows on structures.
Primarily self-taught, she has taken numerous workshops with internationally-known artists, including Charles Reid, Mel Stabin, Frank Webb, Eric Wiegardt, Judi Wagner, John Salminen, and Ted Minchin all members of the American Watercolor Society. She has taken plein air oil workshops with noted artists Kevin Macpherson, Scott Christensen, Kenn Backhaus, Gay Faulkenberry, Gavin Brooks, Deborah Paris, Roger Dale Brown, Larry Moore, Rick McClure, John Poon , Barbara Flowers and Jim Carson. She has been influenced by the creative artists in her family, most importantly her father, Maurice LaReau, and more recently her daughter, Susan Meredith.
Karen, an award winning artist, has been accepted into a number of juried shows. She is available for instruction and does commissions upon request.
