"My artistic passion is to capture the fleeting effects of light and color in my paintings and celebrate the many charms of North Carolina. The deep shadows of morning, the warmth of the light towards the end of day, and Carolina blue skies in all their glory pull me outdoors to explore and indulge in my love for painting en plein air. Whether exploring the Carolina coast, countryside, or my garden for subjects, I take great pleasure in being outdoors and painting from life. Rainy days keep me in the studio, enjoying the endless possibilities of still life, many times inspired by a visit to a local farmer's market to collect subjects.
I have a lifelong fascination with creative endeavors and many of my first memories are of drawing and constructing all types of "projects". I continued with a Fine Art degree at the University of Wisconsin—Madison, and have enjoyed a long and successful career as a graphic designer, art director, and writer, while raising a family and moving several times. However, there was a longing for more personal expression at the end of each full day. And so several years ago, I began my journey into painting from life, on location, inspired by our beautiful surroundings."
Kristen is a regular participant in area juried shows and a member of PaintNC, the Visual Art Exchange, and the Cary Gallery of Artists. She teaches painting at the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill, and is devoted to painting outside every day.
