Artist Statement
I work mostly on the wheel, but also embrace hand building techniques in my pieces. I make both functional and decorative pottery, using light stoneware and porcelain to show off colorful glazes and other surface design techniques. I use lots of surface design methods like: diluting underglazes and painting on surfaces to get a watercolor inspired look, carving greenware to enhance how glazes break, Mishima, marbling clay, wax and tape resist, crystalline and crackle glazes, and running flux glazes with intentional drips “caught” by stable glazes and underglazes. I love how glazes transform with “the magic” that happens in the kiln.
I enjoy making pottery for different seasons and holidays: luminary snowmen and trees in winter, jack-o-lanterns, pumpkins and ghosts in autumn, and decorates with flowers, birds and suns in spring and summer.
My goal is to bring joy into everyday spaces, with useful pieces, that are also fun and beautiful.
Artist Bio
I was born and raised in New Jersey, and received my undergraduate and graduate degrees from Rutgers University. I moved south to Charlotte, NC, for a job with IBM. After work, I took pottery classes at the local community college with a friend. One class even had a Raku firing in the parking lot! A love for pottery and ceramics was born!
Family and work demands caused a pause in my ceramic journey until I retired. I am now a member of the Triangle Potters Guild, and have immersed myself in the classes and communities at Sertoma and Pullen Arts Centers. I have also set up a complete pottery studio at home!
