I am Nancy Farantatos, a NC artist working from my home studio in Raleigh. When I was ten years old the nuns at my parochial school discovered that I had artistic talent. I was given the tasks of decorating all 8 classroom bulletin boards, all the windows at Christmastime and entering all poster contests in my town of Closter, NJ. I remember making my dollhouse and furniture.

I studied art at Penn State, got married and traveled the world with my husband and two sons. In 1986 I fell in love with pastels and had my first one woman art show in Germany. My pastels evolved into mixed media and in 2005 I decided to explore something different that would satisfy all my instincts. I started to paint with acrylic on poplar wood slats, circles, dowels etc. Then cut them and glue them to a wooden backing at different levels to create dimension. Finally, I use black sharpie to define and use repetitive patterns. I cut most of the wood and frames myself.

I think I have created something unique. My greatest reward is when I hear "I've never seen anything like this. How did you do this?"

I was a resident artist at the Sunflower Studio and Gallery in Wake Forest for 6 years until it closed. Now I am happy to be a member at the Cary Gallery of Artists.
