LINDSEY CHESTER

IMG_8455_edited.jpg

Lindsey Chester received her BFA from Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of Art in 1982. She graduated with a concentration in Printmaking. She had a career as a women’s clothing designer on Seventh Avenue, where she put her drawing skills to work for several national sportswear firms.

Like many people in Cary, Lindsey is a transplant from the Northeast. After several years of painting almost every surface in her home, she turned to painting on canvas in 2014. She credits the return to her artistic roots as a saving grace during COVID-19.

Lindsey is an active member of the Fine Arts League of Cary and has served on their board. She is a regular with the CAM Raleigh Urban Sketchers, who she credits with sparking her love of plein air painting.
Early works include many of the historic structures in Cary, Apex, Pittsboro, and Raleigh. More recent subjects are portraits, urban landscapes from foreign trips, and beach scenes filled with people.

Whether in acrylic or watercolor, the color sensibility and overall style are the same. An impressionist style with vibrant colors, particularly greens and purples. The love of contrasts and capturing a mood are what keep Lindsey coming back to paper and canvas almost every day. Lindsey’s favorite subjects are People, Places, and Pets, all that spark memories for the viewer.

Artist Statement

I paint what I love to see. The play of light on a building or a piece of fruit inspires me.  Color effects intrigue me. Interpreting what I see for others to enjoy moves me to continue my practice in acrylic and watercolor paint. I like to say that I am a lifelong learner and that I am “practicing” my art. It may never be perfect, but it is the journey that inspires me to improve and try to get better every day.

My life’s work is about building community and connecting people. My art attempts to do the same thing. Whether that is painting a scene from my hometown for others to appreciate or capturing the expression on a beloved pet’s face for a client, I strive to make connections.
